    When someone tells you it is about citizenship; that is a distraction. A citizen gets the right to vote—that is important, obviously—but the the 13th and 14th Amendments come before the 15th; they set the pre-conditions: a polity cannot be subordinated and a politiy must be inclusive to persons.

    Again, what is fundamental about the Reconstruction Amendment is: you have a set of political and civil rights because you are a person, with an inherent dignity, and a political community owes everyone within that political community these basic rights. That was the revolution of Reconstruction.

    And for everyone—the Fifteenth Amendment—is the bulwark for every other voting Amendment: it is the model, and so, Alito’s absolute misreading of the Voting Rights Act is an attack on how we have moved from voting being a franchise to a right.
