    Abandoning that sensible, humane principle in favour of an idea that settlement is some sort of “privilege” to be granted/ withheld by the government, on the basis of your behaviour or income, leads directly to the far-right idea that people shouldn’t be allowed the privilege of to settling at all.

    A minimally decent, pragmatic approach, if we have to have borders at all, is that once people have lived here for a while as part of the community, they shouldn’t have to keep proving their right to stay - so they should get the right of permanent settlement.
