    So why should we defer to the political, electoral, or rhetorical instincts of these leaders? It’s like saying we can’t criticize the president since the sun successfully rose every day he’s been in office.

    There are good things and bad things about this new reality. But what it certainly does mean is that the party leaders can take little credit for outcomes. One year Jeffries and Schumer are geniuses winning impossible races; the next year Thune and Trump are.

    Maybe there was a time when politics was local — the ability of Dems to win Ohio depended on selecting the perfect candidate. But this is an era of intensely nationalized voting and everyone in the party does approximately the same. If it’s a good year, everyone will win; a bad year, everyone loses.

    And at some point it begins to feel like a little bit of a trick. Despite their scolding, I don’t notice the supposed political whizzes racking up win after win. Their fortunes swing back and forth the same as everyone else’s, driven by national shifts that sweep along left, right, and center.

    It’s infuriating to be told that politics requires us, the governed, to suppress our own well-founded outrage at the state of the country, and instead focus on issues that are better aligned with popular sentiment, as understood by people who haven’t pumped their own gas in 15 years.
