People may joke but this might be where this all ends up: on the industry recreating old forms of gatekeeping so that social proof and webs of trust can be used to stem the tide of low-effort slop, effectively undoing what digital distribution did in the late 2000s and early 2010s.

I wish they would *at least* admit that they are chasing attention through sensationalism. There is a hypothetical market case for becoming a well-groomed tabloid that is outcome-neutral. Embarrassingly, not only won't they admit that, they try to claim their fake non-judgment is virtuous.
