The colonial concept of the empty desert is also linked to the averting of the Western eye from places like Palestine and Syria--which are clearly NOT deserts but the orientalising imagination firmly links Arab culture with the desert, and in voiding the desert, it voids Arab life.

For example Jane Wolff's remarkable book 'Bay Lexicon' gives San Franciscans the right language to describe their place & thus to speak for & advocate for it.
