    So anyway the swords vs. guns logic mostly doesn't matter because the empire almost never actually fights against armed resistance. They probably do go in and do spec ops stuff. But there's no army taking the field type of shit. They don't have the numbers.

    I'm not confident that a family that's been conquered even for three or four generations is ever anything but refugees, at best. They don't become part of the empire so I am not sure they can constitute imperial-aligned military forces.

    We see some of this in Nona, but the people of conquered planets don't become imperial citizens. They aren't part of the Houses, probably not even after generations.

    Like, the solar system? That's where the imperials are from. I don't know that they HAVE thalergy planets outside the sol system, where a bunch of imperial families might be pumping out dozens of fat babies apiece.

    Don't get me wrong. I think they have swords, and they know how to use them, and God seems to really hate guns! But I strongly suspect the Imperial population is a tiny fraction of the population of free humans and that pitched battles aren't a thing.
