Incredible story here. Victoria Broderick and Lakesha Womack are working-class women. Womack was homeless and living in a motel 7 years ago. Neither of them pursued donors and instead focused on local organizing. They each spent less than $100k on their races. They're both going to Congress.

where “the president is gaslighting us”got us was asking ICE to wear bodycams while they brutalize us. it’s demanding we “prosecute killer cops.” it’s calling the police on ICE. it’s training police to do all the violence they do while they wear a ribbon to raise awareness about DV. it’s a dead end.

all I’ve been trying to say is, women aren’t exceptional when it comes to the state upholding violence against us. that’s not gaslighting; that’s the law. and that’s scarier, more daunting. but we can be honest: we aren’t alone in this. we can remake accountability and safety. we already are.

what caution I came into 2016 with, was learned from watching women who said they wanted accountability for sexual violence turning to police and of course not getting it. that was the state doing what it does.

over the ensuing decade I more or less gave up on dispelling the “gaslighter in chief” story people were telling themselves. but maybe in the glow of the midterms, it’s worth trying again. because we didn’t “leave our abuser” this week. we exercised power together: organizing and voting and winning.
