OK, so Hilton is hovering around 36%. Votes still being counted but if his final share isn't above 36.5% (Evelle Younger, 1978) then this would be the lowest share for a Republican candiate for California governor since 1914.

It might actually be the worse for the losing candidate since 1950, when James Roosevelt (D) got 35%. Richard Nixon got 47% in 1962 and immediately crashed out at a press conference.
