Hahaha! Yeah, tbh I don’t love the bell, especially how it can be interpreted as “get out of my way!” If this lady hadn’t nearly hit someone I wouldn’t have said anything. MUPs really are just a terrible way to put conflicting travellers in the same space.

As someone who often rides without a bell, I understand your frustrations. Bells are quite frankly useless on MUPs, I find a lot of people now have headphones in, and when I've used them, either people do the "dance" (jump from left to right), or don't hear me at all.
