The dome in the series Starship would be a Metafier. A person inside the dome could be astral projected(?) onto a planet, without ever leaving the ship. A very cheap story travel mechanism without trying to be a Transporter. Within the Trek universe it probably would have been a Transporter. :)

Matt Jefferies (if indeed) did the painting much later than the original sketches. The painting was done for the "Starship" series. (That never came to fruition.) That painting then was handed over by Roddenberry to Rick during TMP production with a request to add it to the Rec Room ship wall.

If you are a ship geek, (Yes you are! 😀) there was "often" talk about a football and a spherical shaped side dome on the XCV 330. In reality the football was never "real". It was confusion over the result of the high contrast ink version that Rick Sternbach did from the painting by Matt Jefferies.

Same goes for me — the administrators for Unbound and Boundless insisted all copies were sent to me and none sold to OOINYA, but they continue to be liars. If you see the blue cover Effin’ Birds paperback or any copies of Greetings From Effin’ Birds on Amazon, those are stolen books.
