Postu gösterAlso, plenty of atheists have commitments to a "higher order", that's why ideologies exist, and religious people bend or break the rules all the time. The distinction between atheist and religious ethics are essentially false.
Postu gösterPeople are generous in some ways, but can be selfish in other ways. Systems that can mitigate the negative effects of people's selfishness - like taxation and socialised healthcare - are good. The good is done when people are spared suffering, not when someone feels good about sparing that suffering
Postu gösterThe problem with this attitude is that it assumes everyone will become Good if it's morally incumbent on them to do so, and given the sheer scale of wealth inequality and the suffering the poorest go through, it should be obvious that this does not happen.
Postu gösterI sympathise with the desire to have people look out for each other more, but I don't think it substitutes for specialist medical care in hospitals, and I don't think GoFundMes for emergency surgery are a sign of the system working.
