(This last post is my opinion, not Alsup’s)

If class counsel signed an agreement with random people to take on work that class counsel was supposed to do, class counsel can pay those people out of class counsel's own extremely generous recovery of fees.

So TL;DR the judge very clearly said that he opposed giving any of the class's money to these people, who are not class counsel, and I agree with that completely. I'm not sure what they'll be seeking on appeal, but one of these goobers literally wanted to be paid $64K an hour.

So I will amend my earlier statement, where I thought it definitely would, to a later statement, which is "who the fuck are these randos? we don't know and they haven't told us."

Judge Alsup does echo one of the things I mentioned (and deleted) earlier: since we don't know who the fuck these people are representing or even if someone else is paying them, giving these randos an award might effectively give publishers a better deal than authors.
