    Overall I'm very surprised that these issues arent more widely acknowledged in the conservation genomics literature, and seem to be making it past reviewers quite frequently (and in this particular case, resulted in a Science paper with far-reaching claims about genetic diversity loss)

    I see (and often review) so many papers that make these comparisons between modern and historical genomes and estimate large shifts in diversity on short timescales (~10-20 generations) that simply are not possible based on basic pop gen and are screaming of batch effects due to aDNA degradation.
