2/2: An easy rescue - and it has at least an inch of stem remaining. This fish-scale design was quite popular, and the shape dates it to the 1850-1910 period.

Another alley gob for my collection, found on the Thames foreshore - but look at the rich multi-coloured glaze of this one; I think it might be my favourite! These ceramic cubes were from a street game known as Alley Gobs, Five Stones etc, and came in many colours.

2/2: And here's how he turned out! He's wonderfully characterful, but an anomaly: with that hat, he appears to be a French military or official figure, but he looks abnormally cheerful for such. The shape/style of pipe dates it to the later 1800s to early 1900s period. Anyone recognise him?
