    Larger insects than we see today are known to the fossil record—but their size has been demonstrated to track the amount of atmospheric oxygen! Slow diffusion and smaller amounts of available oxygen prevent insects from getting too big—a perk of being alive today rather than in the Paleozoic.

    When I was a kid I used to have nightmares about giant beetles breaking in through the windows of my school cafeteria. Today I am relieved to put those fears to rest: the laws of physics limit the maximum size insects can grow to. 🧵⚛️🧪

    hahaha definitely not my anecdotal and recent experience with a *totally human* reviewer at a *major, reputable journal* with an *explicit policy against using LLMs for peer review*!!! Sometimes declining to review is the best thing you can do for the health of the field... ⚛️🧪
