If anything, the existence of OCS could be a hindrance to ensuring public safety alternatives are fully funded, since you can tell people that we have a robust system of public safety responses, and hope people don't look too hard at the fact that it's still mostly police.
Postu gösterBecause so long as the Police Department budget outpaces the budget of the Neighborhood Safety department by a factor of over 20 to 1 (over 25 to 1 by 2028), then it seems to me the Police Department is going to dominate our public safety response regardless of this issue.
Postu gösterIf people are serious about making sure that our public safety ecosystem is not dominated by police - a goal I support - then maybe they should spend less time worrying about the structure of higher-level administrators and more time ensuring public safety alternatives are fully resourced.
Postu gösterIf you add up all the budgets for the public safety departments, the Police Budget makes up about 64 to 65% of that, with no meaningful proposed change over the next few years. Indeed, the Police Department is one of the few departments protected from budget cuts in the mayor's proposed budget.
Postu gösterI think there are reasonable arguments for and against the Office of Community Safety's existence. But I've been puzzled by several council members saying with a straight face that the city's public safety response will be dominated by police, as if that isn't happening currently.
