Be careful. A 10% swing (say) means only 5% changed direction, and first-past-the-post is a phenomenal amplifier of small differences. Don't get me wrong, I like the results and they matter. But don't overstate the underlying shift. It's huge but it's also small.

Yes, this would be very difficult in contemporary Japan! But the problems are similar: older people need to be seen as one “interest group” amongst others, and one that grows ever more powerful in relation to younger people over time.
