    From a bit of googling, a Parliament website reckons that the term 'Union Jack' came from Union Jacobus (James). I thought it was from the jack-staff on a ship which it flew from, and so it's only a Union Jack on a ship. Elsewhere it's the Union Standard or Flag (or Butcher's Apron)

    Interesting. So the flag in 1606 wasn't actually a national flag, it was the King's flag, following the union of the crowns. Surely it wasn't a national flag until the union of the parliaments in 1707.
