As with the robbery example, deterrence is paramount. Watching tech oligarchs, media outlets, and others capitulate and collaborate the last 2 years, it was so obvious they're cynically selfish actors responding to hugely asymmetrical incentives (they fear only one party). The asymmetry must change.

If someone robs a bank, no one is gonna be like, "well, prosecuting them and potentially throwing them in prison is just getting even, so we should let it go." Same thing here. Crimes have been committed, and prosecuting them is not getting even, it's accountability.
