There's lots of discussion about Mao going round at the moment, so I'm sharing something from an article I published back in 2013. This section of the text talks about the deification of Mao, and is based on my PhD fieldwork with Mangghuer communities in northeast Tibet.

Thirty years ago this explicitly called out that Western academia incentivizes simplifying, homogenizing, and flattening narratives about colonized cultures while excusing the role their intelligentsia played in systems of domination before, during and after colonialism, and everyone ignored it!
