    Also, I think the acting and the human drama in GMZ is ultimately*better* than Minus One's, and I think it strikes a better balance between haunted self-reflection and campy melodrama. It isn't as pure and distilled as M1, of course, but what would you expect from an honest-to-God Kaiju epic?

    While Minus One is perhaps a more cohesive and accessible work of art, I think Minus Zero is the movie that will stand as a grand testament to the franchise's legacy, and the multitude of modes and tones that it has occupied across its titanic history.

    It grapples with the complex and painful legacy of the bomb and the military occupation of Japan in a manner that we haven't seen since the original Godzilla '54, and it goes to great lengths to synthesize tropes and iconography from across the Showa, Heisei, and even MonsterVerse eras.

    The movie is juggling more characters and more conflicts than Minus One had to work with, and of course the Big G himself has a much reduced role compared to his awe-inspiring presence in the first film. What Minus Zero contributes to the mythology of the franchise is invaluable, however.

    Godzilla Minus Zero is a darker, sadder, and much stranger movie than Minus One. A lot of folks are going to translate that to "worse than Minus One," but that's an oversimplification in my view. I think what Minus Zero lacks instant emotional gratification it makes up for with its depth of feeling.
