"In recent years, record-breaking heatwaves have occurred over many regions of the Earth causing serious impacts to human and natural systems. Here we show that recently observed exceptional heatwaves are no match to potential future 21st century events based on multiple metrics."

Even under zero emissions scenarios, with zero emissions from tomorrow, the planet’s energy imbalance is now 3x bigger than it was 20 years ago. Warming will continue until we remove the excess greenhouse gas content from the atmosphere (which will take natural processes 500 to 1000+ years).

"Should the Nationally Determined Contributions under the Paris Agreement not be implemented, in most regions a concerningly large proportion of projected heatwaves exceeds all analyzed heatwave characteristics at once."

Here is a thread on climate modelling. 🧵 A climate model is an abstract description of climate using mathematical concepts or computer language. It is used to simulate dynamics and interactions of components and drivers of climate (such as greenhouse effect, atmosphere, oceans, land surface, ice).
