    Hey, guy, want to learn about the word "guy"? Because it starts with the 1605 Gunpowder Treason to blow up King James I & Parliament. Really. Our generic use of "guy" makes reference to pro-Catholic plotter & explosives expert Guy Fawkes.

    Guy Fawkes Night, ostensibly a day of thanksgiving, but with a dark anti-Catholic tone, involved the construction of effigies of Fawkes to burn. These were called "guys". The term came to be applied in early 19th century to people who dressed shabbily or looked outlandish, like these effigies.

    Bonus fact: The Fawkes family were Norman French. The name 'Guy' in French is pronounced "gee", but the English had adapted it to local vowel sounds. Feel free to begin saying "guy" in the original French pronunciation, okay, my gee? Guy Fawkes also went by Italian 'Guido', so that's also in play.
