This lobar pattern is established early in embryonic development. However, there is no established evolutionary theory explaining why our lungs are arranged in this specific way.

The asymmetry extends to the airways too. Since the left main bronchus has to pass beneath the aortic arch to reach the left lung, the right main bronchus is shorter, wider, and more vertical. That is why inhaled objects most often end up on the right side, at least in adults.

Beyond the difference in lobe count, the two lungs aren't mirror images of each other. It comes down to neighboring organs competing for chest real estate: The right lung is shorter because the liver lifts the right dome of the diaphragm higher.

Meanwhile, the left lung is longer and narrower because the heart occupies more space on the left. It even has a specialized indentation called the cardiac notch to accommodate the heart, making the left lung roughly 18% smaller in volume than the right!
