    Seriously. I would take Windows 98 WordArt and a terrible stick figure. At least that feels like a CHOICE was made, and I know it was a decently moral one.

    Or do you want one that is real, even if not slick or trendy or whatever? Because I am not alone in refusing anything AI has touched. Do you want the kind of readers who are fine with exploitation and antintellectual pablum? I would read a thousand books with MS Paint covers before one with AI.

    And it tells me that you don’t mind using tech that relies on stealing from your fellow artists, hurting marginalized communities, and generally destroying the earth. That’s not something I want to support. So. You pick. Do you want the soulless cover that looks sort of like what you want?

    I regret to inform you that life is full of such compromises. Did you know trad pub authors most often don’t get to choose what goes on the front? They might get input. And frankly, using AI is accepting less than you want, whether you realize it or not. No matter what, it looks terrible!

    I can use one of the many, many resources available through Creative Commons. I can license stock photos. I can use public domain imagery. I can take a photo myself (and have done). What people don’t want to cop to is that they can’t handle having to accept less than their “dream” cover for cheap.
