My undergrad SLAC revamped the math on-ramp tracks, & within a few years 8-10% of all students were doing math majors, typically a double with something else. They'd hired a bunch of really dynamic teachers & it was almost as remarkable how many non-majors took 200- or 300-level classes "for fun."

Fun fact: our chemistry faculty totally reworked our entire CHEM sequence so it was scaffolded and not a weed-out sequence. DFWs dropped by 2/3 to something like 10%. Same content. Same outcomes. Just resequenced and supported.

Precarious finances and enrollment challenges mean persistence and retention are everyone's priority, and institutional expectations of faculty reflect that reality
