    i mentioned this to a friend as a reason why i prefer the first game and “you control the buttons you press” was the answer i got. i think that’s stupid. the entire fun is that you ARE limited. if the stuff you wanna use is already there then you aren’t being limited. limitations breed creativity.

    for example, i think super mario maker is better than its sequel due to having way less tools at your disposal, it feels like you’re really pushed into a corner to think of ways to replicate normal mario stuff. meanwhile in smm2 why would you do that it’d be weird not to use the new course elements

    hot take: i think saying “you control the buttons you press” is a stupid phrase especially when someone is criticising a game for creativity or game design reasons. in fact i’d say it hinders creativity and imaginative thought and ignores the mental aspects of why people have these opinions
