  My own view: if the US wants to have any chance of restoring trust from the rest of the world, they need to clean out this corrupt regime root and branch.

  This is lousy leadership. One of the first things I learned as an IT team leader was that when you talk to clients and outsiders you personally own your team's mistakes. "They're my team. If we made a mistake it's my fault. You deal with me and it's my responsibility to fix it."
