  This is something even the most experienced and knowledgeable energy analysts and climate experts have somehow just been not able to grasp: if you have high data centre growth, the ONLY SITUATION in which emissions are lower is when those DCs fund **MORE CLEAN ENERGY** than their growth

  Consistently - consistently! If you are worked up about a problem in the electric system, pause and ask about whether it's relevant to the gas system, too. More often than not, it's way, way worse over there, but regulators lack electric side tools to address it, and nobody's paying attention.

  And when data centers say they don’t care what they pay for power but they need 99.999% reliability, that means they will keep using gas even during crises, pushing up prices until someone else says “uncle”. Winter Storm Fern drove prices through the roof, and data centers would have made it worse.

  Getting a little wonky: natural gas is a shared market for the whole country, so gas-powered data centers anywhere drive up gas bills (and power bills) everywhere. I’m not sure how data centers can use so much gas and still protect everyone. But they can use clean power without raising our bills.
