I know how hard it is. I’ve been called names, berated and shamed for trying to emotionally connect in our way. I’m sure you have too. The tips above helped me be able to connect more without it coming off as trying to steal the spotlight. I wish you all the best <3
Postu göster* Frame it with a “I know how that feels”, “I’ve been there”, “I understand what you are going through” or similar. * Some people just want to vent, and need to vent first before sharing. This is just the order their brain goes in. Ultimately, it will take a bit of practice, but you can connect!
Postu göster* Keep stories short and directly relevant, this can be difficult if there is a lot of nuance, keeping it simple is important. * Be mindful when sharing. Sharing a lot at once can lead to people thinking you are trying to take over the conversation. * Let others speak. I know we have a lot to say.
Postu gösterSo how can we still connect without the negative effects? * Try to determine if the person is ready for sharing, if you’re not sure, you can ask. If they say no, realize that they might just be overwhelmed and not ready yet. * Let them definitely know that you are there to listen.
Postu gösterWhen neurodivergent people share stories, it is a sign of trust. “I know what it’s like”, “You can trust me”, “I can recall these feelings and listen and respond”. This is part of active listening for us. We aren’t trying to “talk about ourselves” or “shift the spotlight”. We just want to connect.
