    Middle class and poor white people can't afford to behave this way because they are more dependent on social networks. This isn't white people culture, it's RICH white people culture. And it's anti-social.

    It's been six years and I still think about that a lot. That the fact that pleasantly acknowledged his existence was remarkable. And he was right because I have a list of people that I met MULTIPLE times who would not even fucking nod at me in the hallway because I wasn't important enough.

    This is an incredibly dehumanizing culture. So much so that when I quit NYT someone sent me a really incredibly sweet email saying I would be missed that amounted to I said hi to him and smiled when I saw him in the hallways.

    Something it took me a minute to get is that, it's not that everyone in national newsrooms it's rich. It's that rich people set the culture.
