You have to have a style that is both compelling and enthralling, yet with enough brilliance to stay with you, enough points of entrance and departure to bring you back when you are ready to continue the journey. Seriously if you're a Red Sonja fan or not, this is a damned good read. <3 ryka

But this book reminded me of something else entirely. Sometimes a book that is so good you CAN put it down, live your life, deal with edits, buy eggs...then know you can return to and it will be there--like a good friend or favorite comfort food. It's not easy to write like that.

And when Simone wants to, she can pierce your hearts with vivid moments that stay with you, even when you need to put her book down and work on your own. That's what I found most amazing about this book, We often talk about books you can't put down--which is a good thing.

Here, we can see Red Sonja not only through her own thoughts, her own viewpoints--but reflected in those around her, whether they be mortal enemies, spurned lovers (with her, it's usually both). As far as her writing style...it's so damned KNOWING. She is at turns brutal, poignant, descriptive...
