Yes, never having personally experienced a tonal language before I started learning Thai, it had never occurred to me before that this would be an issue or something to take into account. Fascinating, as you say.
Postu gösterI’m afraid I don’t really listen to much T-pop and so can’t answer those questions. But for a while I was learning Thai and we did discuss with my teacher how tonality (one of the hardest aspects for me as a language learning whose first language is English) interacted with music and lyrics.
Postu gösterI found it fascinating (although Thai is another tonal language with musical difficulties so mentioning T-pop might have been good). One possible “defining” C-pop factor that wasn’t talked about was C-drama OSTs. Dramas are bringing ballads to international audiences, and could be the new HK films!
