    In addition to this absurd chart, the article is full of Daily Mail/CSJ tropes (confusing "benefits" with all state spending, talking about "work incentives" while ignoring fact PIP is non-means tested, etc, etc). Inexcusable from FT.

    I happen to think it’s a good thing that we try to guarantee a minimum standard of living for pensioners and that people with mental health problems receive financial support.

    The NEETs problem is obviously a real issue, but you’d have to go a long way to convince me that the generosity of welfare payments is a significant contributing factor.

    Is the welfare system perfect? No. But any system of insurance suffers from adverse selection. But look at the outcomes: the prime-age employment-population and investment-GDP ratios are close to record highs. Any bad incentives being created can’t be all that powerful, surely.
