    If it sounds like I'm stuck on Mississippi in particular, it's because pre-civil rights Mississippi is maybe the closest any modern American state got to being a full-blown totalitarian terror regime. And now the party of multiracial liberal democracy can now credibly compete there statewide.

    That's not hyperbole. They dismantled the VRA, attempted to resegregate the armed forces, and lock in permanent authoritarian rule by a white business elite. And what happened? They lost their grip on the birthplace of that politics.

    It doesn't escape my notice that the massive Democratic breakthrough in the South (including Mississippi!) happened after Republicans engaged in a two year effort to take Jim Crow governance national.
