I'm not sure what you mean by "getting their clocks cleaned." The overwhelming majority of energy being added to the grid is from renewables, right?

I thought the levelized cost of solar+wind+batteries was now lower than fossil fuel use. Especially with oil wars + interest rates going up. In California the grid uses a lower amount of gas every year (Mark Z. Jacobson tracks this actively), and there are plenty of datacenters here.

Filibuster means that there will be no appreciable difference in how datacenters are treated after January 3 election. And it is likely more deals will need to be made to get a few Republican votes to pass cloture under Democratic Senate leadership. Trump will not give Senate & House Dems a win.

It was an example of the politics of the moment. ACA only passed 219-212. Thirty-four (34) Democrats voted against it. Remember too that there were 60 Democratic Senators which made it filibuster proof. Filibuster means that it is unlikely that a better deal can be had.

I'm pretty simple-minded too that history shows that the politics of the moment is important to pass legislation of substance. For example, Affordable Care Act, aka ObamaCare. And a bi-partisan bill is the only way to get Trump's buy-in within next two years. I frankly don't see the leverage.
