to cut off the inevitable pedantic arguments about the 20 year figure I used above: I am very aware of surveillance tech and SV history. While we can debate for years about when it started, I’d say 20 years is a good enough figure for “bad enough for even non-specialists to start noticing.”

The U.S. needs strict, enforced regulations on tech, user data, and privacy - at least in line with the other wealthy democracies we like to compare ourselves to. Until then, more and more Americans are going to conclude Silicon Valley tech is just as dangerous to their own interests as China’s is.

And a lot of Americans are quite capable of grasping how hypocritical it is that U.S. big tech companies only seem to give a shit about protecting user data and privacy from potentially dangerous abuse when they’re calling for bans on Chinese products that compete with them.
