The corollary to this — and I know I’m not saying something you don’t already know bc I’ve mentioned it before — is that we also don’t have positive structures for becoming an elder, something that impoverishes both younger and older people

US culture's INABILITY to deal honestly with aging and death is part of why we are dealing with this. You are NOT getting cognitively and physically more healthy as you age. That's just not true. The lifecycle is progressive mental and physical decline. There is NOTHING wrong with this.
