    The success of large language models is generally seen as very surprising - ChatGPT blew everyone away in November 2022 including experts. But was anyone not surprised? Were there people who'd predicted "all we need is more data and this will work?" (Other than OpenAI employees who had previews).

    That is a fair point. I do think there is an additional and different challenge with the sheer scale and stakes attached to English Language in comparison.
