"Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose" is a strangely beautiful work of art. It's a masterpiece of philosophical woe, but it still allows for hope: after all, if random chance gave Bruckman the ability to see our deaths, then maybe random chance can save us. And maybe Scully won't die at all. Grade: A
Postu gösterIt feels mildly unfair to be so critical of Carter here when so much of this is solid, but even if every single component part of the production is *beautifully* done, I need it to be in service of more than just an unremarkable spooky story at this point, especially from the showrunner. Grade: C+
Postu gösterThe direction is great, with some legitimately terrifying shots (Neech's wife seeing his ghost and slowly walking the dark house is the best scene), and the guest acting is reliably solid. As a prison drama it's gritty enough, as a ghost story it's spooky enough. It just doesn't do more than coast.
Postu gösterBut the thing about X-Files by now is that even when the material is subpar, it's still shockingly well-made. The prison set they built from scratch is just phenomenal, and the eerie green lighting helps the creep factor a lot. The sense of pure immersion is so strong it papers over some weaknesses.
Postu gösterMulder and Scully also don't do *anything* and the plot never once needs them. It's not fun to feel like your leads are superfluous. Frankly it would've been better to have Mulder know the names on the list from the start so the episode could've been about him trying to protect them from the ghost.
