    In a financialized post-industrial global economy, education can be hoarded by the elite, and what gaps remain can be filled by educated foreign workers. American oligarchs have zero need for an educated American populace, and infinite need for an easily controllable uneducated American underclass.

    The full answer is long, but in short a broadly educated population only benefits capital holders in an industrial economy that needs a lot of highly technical specialized labor. In other economies all education does is give the underclass the intellectual capacity to question existing hierarchies.
