The approach demonstrates the possibility and benefit of working with naturalistic stimuli for ecologically valid memory design. Also, a big thanks to @mschoenauer.bsky.social for her guidance and wisdom.

A particular highlight for me is that we harnessed the richness of episodic memory in a naturalistic design, using data-driven analysis strategies and computer-vision based semantic segmentation (led by the phenomenal @Hannah Habenicht).

During free recall the next day, narratives emphasised goal-relevant content. Fittingly, the amount of goal-dependent gaze shift across encoding was related to the resulting narrative bias. Our goal states shape the encoding and retrieval of episodic memories.

Very happy to share our new preprint on the biasing effect of goals on naturalistic memories! www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6... Across 100 participants viewing film clips, we found that gaze continuously shifts towards information relevant to our goals.
