Gentleman Jim boasts one of Flynn’s best performances, without a doubt. His James Corbett is brash and charming, able to insinuate himself into any situation – and at the same time, his self-absorption is maddening; he manages to be at once sly and callow. It’s expert playing on Flynn’s part. 👍

In Brooks's novel the man is killed for being gay. The Code wouldn't allow it, so the film made him Jewish. Still the first B-movie ever nominated for Best Picture.

True that. I think there's a vague sort of implication in there still, a sort of shadow of the original gay motivation in the characterizations of Samuels and Mitchell as gentle artistic types, under the overtly-stated anti-semitism.

It's there. Dmytryk said later the Code made them think: anything censorable had to go in sideways. Samuels and Mitch are the sideways.

#filmsky #moviesky #NoirvemberChallenge Favorite #FilmNoir Comeuppance: Most likely an unpopular opinion — but I dislike the film, LAURA (1944). Why? Clifton Webb is extremely off-putting to me. So, Waldo Lydecker’s comeuppance is pretty darn satisfying.
