The dust from everyone's favourite interstellar interloper (3I/ATLAS) looks quite different in the infrared from the comets in our own solar system. The grains look to be amorphous instead of crystalline, meaning a different environment/processing. Thomas+ arxiv.org/abs/2610.37540 🧪🔭
Postu gösterLess likely. This is the cleanup we were expecting. Also, it's a weak distant resonant TNO: exactly as expected from dynamical excitation through Neptune migration
Postu gösterBut it means we're likely pretty close to complete on the bright large TNOs rmag < 19.5 . So maybe there's another one - But it's exciting to see Rubin Observatory finding these things and doing what it was designed to do 😀
Postu gösterNot that it got spotted quickly - From all the brighter surveys, it's been suggested there are ~1-2 bright large TNOs to find that could have been lurking in the southern skies or in the Galactic plane iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1...
Postu gösterNot sure this qualifies as magical but I use an app called EasyFind. I long ago kind of gave up on the Finder actually finding things and EasyFind just, well, finds things easily. Can do weird complex finds or just a quick type-and-go. De-enshitifies finding files.
