Just to remind you all how we got here: a lot of it was things like these students marching 40 minutes together to vote because they didn't get a polling place on campus. We need to remember them and make sure that they never have to do it again.

This has not changed in modern times. The miilitary is always a threat to the ruling faction. There is a reason that the US military has (or at least had, before the semi-recent era) significant required training for officers that had them swearing oaths to the Constitution.

So I've been reading about ancient China for reasons, and one of the recurring historical themes is this: if you're an emperor, you have to be very careful about your generals. Yes, this is relevant to the question about the police.
