    One thing about our polling obsession is that they are really genuinely useful tools for something other than *predicting election outcomes.*. As a measure of “public opinion” as amorphous and dynamic as that is, they really do give us crucial insight. But we want them to tell the future.

    Particularly in close races, which is where we make that demand the most energetically! A poll showing a candidate up 15 with an MOE of 3, sure, OK. But when the poll shows a 2-point margin in a close race, it can really do little better than telling us what we know: it's a close race.
