The US voted for a madman who had tried to overturn their democracy. If they did it once they can do it again, no matter how much prettier things look this evening. I hope they don't but you have to assume they might.

A country like that is too unstable to base your geopolitical calculations on, whether it's trade, defence, or institutional leadership. It's like being chained to a mad dog.

Godwilling things continue as they are now. But the western world must give up on the notion of American leadership. Carney's middle powers plan should be pursued no matter who governs the US.

I'm happy that the Republicans and Trump got a kicking yesterday - a very good day for global democracy. But from a European perspective, we cannot allow our economies & security to be dependent on the whims of US voters every couple of years. We have to insulate ourselves from US domestic politics.
