    Their scale-less skin provides no defense, but sharp spines, irritating mucus & noxious chemical emanations make any predator regret taking a bite. The vibrant blue pigment is there to be sure that predator REMEMBERS not to mess with blue animals in the sea.

    Gene duplication can be the raw material of evolution: modifying pigments found in close relatives to entirely new color schemes. The bright colors likely advertise their defensive measure: they 'stink' & are toxic. 'Sacciform cells' produce layers of toxic mucus filled with irritants.

    So scientists sequenced their genome & discovered... they're a patchwork of cells that express blue pigment & cells that express BOTH blue & red pigments (Cyano-erythrophores), producing the two distinct colors in their patchwork skin. They also had a lot of duplicated pigment genes!
