    E.g., Fred Sanger, (2x Chemistry Nobel laureate) had a much smaller H-index than a lot of journeyperson med school faculty.

    I am relying on the same approach, and have throughout my career. Let's talk about H-index for a moment. An H-index is an investigator's number (n) of papers, with (n) citations. It is not useful for comparing authors at different career stages because it is correlated with seniority.

    H-index is also correlated with collaboration. So if you are one of many authors on big consortium papers, you will probably have a much higher H-index than if you work in small groups on highly focused projects.
