It would be an abhorrent policy even if it was true, but it's ridiculous that the Home Office is being allowed to claim their plans save money. Cutting immigration hurts the economy and the fervent protestations of a bunch of racist think tank rejects isn't going to change that.

In the end it’s hard to see how these measures don’t discriminate against women, people with disabilities, those with caring responsibilities. They penalise some of the most vulnerable people in our society when we ought to be supporting them and welcoming them

I'd really like to understand the sequence of slide decks, focus groups and meetings that led to these Home Office proposals. How did Mahmood convince herself that this was a good idea? How have Burnham and other senior Labour figures convinced themselves to let things get so far?
